Frequently asked questions about business names in Spain
You must request a negative name certificate (certificación negativa de denominación social) from the Registro Mercantil Central. This confirms no other company has the same name. The certificate is valid for 6 months.
Names cannot be identical to existing companies, contain reserved institutional words (España, Nacional, Estatal, etc.), start with numbers, or be offensive. The Registro Mercantil also rejects names that are too similar to existing ones.
You can submit up to 5 name options in your application. The Registro Mercantil will approve the first available one. It is recommended to submit all 5 to increase your chances of approval.
