What is Verifactu?

Verifactu features

Verifactu features

E-invoicing software that complies with Verifactu must guarantee, among other things, the immediate generation of a record for every invoice issued and the secure delivery of that information to the Spanish Tax Agency (AEAT).

Mandatory for businesses and freelancers

Is it mandatory for businesses and freelancers?

Those required to implement Verifactu are the e-invoicing software providers. When the freelancer or business starts using a certified invoicing program, they can decide whether to voluntarily submit their invoices to the Tax Agency. Some exceptions apply.

Verifactu advantages and benefits

Frequently asked questions

Verifactu is an e-invoice verification system promoted by the Spanish Tax Agency to fight tax fraud and accelerate digitalisation in business accounting processes, while an e-invoice is a digital document that certifies a transaction. Every invoicing program, including Holded, must integrate Verifactu to be certified by the AEAT.

Spotting an invoice issued with Verifactu is fairly easy: it carries a QR code with identifying data, includes the "Verifactu" reference that certifies the invoice was generated by a verifiable system, is sent online to the Tax Agency in XML format, lets the buyer verify it through the QR code, and is backed by a record of every invoice and event. The Verifactu billing-record process only becomes mandatory on 1 January 2027. Still, the day-to-day experience should not differ much from current e-invoicing software, with the only exception being that the professional can choose whether to send invoices to the Tax Agency immediately or not.

If your invoicing software does not comply with the Verifactu regulation, you can face a penalty of up to 50,000 euros per fiscal year in which the non-compliant program was used. The same applies if a certified piece of software is altered.
